The Design Process

Photography.

My initial photography focused on creating natural compositions relating to bees and flora. These formed the inspiration for my drawings. I also created collages of my photographs to combine the two parts of my collection, bees and flora. The textures, marks, shapes and colours found in the photographic images influenced my drawings styles. They motivated me to explore different design methods and collections colour palettes

Drawing.

I enjoy exploring different hand drawing skills. This approach led me to experiment with combining different skills. I used my spare time in lockdown to develop and explore new techniques. On going through my late grandmother’s possessions I found her watercolours. I was fascinated by the varied paintings which she produced in her eighties. They inspired me to experiment with her watercolours and I instantly grew to love using them. I knew I wanted to include my new skill of watercolour painting in my final graduate collection. Continuing with my watercolour painting throughout the project has allowed me to develop it more.

Within the collection I have also included line drawings which illustrate the intricate details of the anatomy of the bees and flora. Focusing on the marks and textures has allowed me to appreciate how small and amazing bees are. I have also carried on my love of collage to make playful bright and bold motifs. This enabled me to use my extensive collection of coloured paper which I enjoy collecting.

Designing.

All the hand drawn designs were brought together on photoshop. I had to adapt to this way of working very late in my project due to the coronavirus third lockdown and not having access to the print room facilities in semester 2. Working digitally has allowed me to manipulate the compositions. It gave me more freedom to experiment. The designs were influenced by the theme and use of the final product. Each design decision was justified according to its context. For example the scale of the writing was designed to be readable. The positioning of key features on a design were influenced by its appearance.

By digitally creating the prints I was able to keep the quality of the drawings such as their textures and unique marks. This facility complemented the watercolours, especially their loose quality and not make them feel flat. The designs were then adapted to fit the requirements of the product which took into account the bleed, hems and manufacturing process.
